This question brings up the inconsisenties of early TV. Often times there were different writers working on the shows thus small details would often times be changed. Most episodes Barney's name was Benard P Fife but there were at least 2 others in different episodes. In the episode where the ladies historical society was looking for the decendent of Nathan Tibbs Barney says his middle name is "Tibbs" where Andy replies, "I thought your middle name was Oliver". In the episode where Barney and Andy find Barney's old cutlass (yearbook) and decide to have a class reunion the yearbook has Barney listed as "Benard Milton Fife".
